Coming around a corner we suddenly saw the new divisional headquarters of Mon spread out over a broad saddle. The village of Mon, invisible on a high hill was already behind us. The modern Mon consists of a large number of office buildings and bungalows, barracks, schools and shops, - all built in the familiar Assam style with white walls on a framework of timber and red roofs of iron sheets. - Though founded only 12 years ago on land belonging partly to Mon and partly to Chui, the modern 'town' has grown surprisingly and seems about as big or bigger than the Kohima of 1936. Motorable roads lead up and down the hillocks to all the different buildings. In between the modern houses there is here and there a Naga house completely in old style. As far as I could see there is no mixing of styles, - for instance Naga style houses are not roofed with iron sheets. |
