But when I asked in various houses whether things were better or worse, the answers were by no means unanimous. Some people thought there were improvements, but others said that life was easier before when there were fewer rules and they could do what they liked. One man, in particular, was outspoken in the assertion that they wanted to be left alone and would not mind if all the officials left and development came to a standstill. |
