Our next call was at the house of Shankok's sister, Lipung, and there I was really touched. (59) She seemed very little changed, being now about 50 and still a handsome and well built woman, and she evinced such pleasure and wonder at seeing me that I felt myself quite moved. She and many others said that they thought I must long have died, a thought very understandable considering that Shankok and nearly all my contemporaries and close associates were dead. Though Lipung still speaks no Assamese, we both understood our feelings and pressed each others hands in affirmation of the pleasure we felt. She had 8 sons, of whom 6 are alive, and two girls, the youngest of whom is six years old. The survival of so many children seems to speak by itself for an improvement of living conditions. |
