change and continuity in morungs |
text: |
Both Bala and Balang had burnt down completely and the buildings put up in replacement were smaller and less richly decorated though an attempt to perpetuate the old forms had been made. Shoupa explained repeatedly that the Wakching people wanted to retain the old customs and way of living, even though 50% were Christians and he himself was a Christian. But both Christians and non-Christians frequented the morungs and took part in the communal life. There were a few foreign items of clothes and particularly many shorts worn by younger men and boys. |
