He was born in Hosaichak. His father came from Hangrum. Only his father came from Hangrum, no other people. His grandfather had land in Hosaichak. He was a Kadepeo. Inf. himself was a Kadepeo, but he gave up his rights for his brother. He has no sons. The present Kadepeo is his youngest brother. Inf. lives with his wife, who is blind, and one unmarried daughter, who is about 20. In informant's childhood the Zemis had no cows, only mithan, pigs, buffaloes and fowls. They purchased cows from the market only some ten years ago. There was an epidemic which killed all the mithan, this was 9-10 years ago. The epidemic affected most Zemi villages. There are no mithan left to restock. (Apparently there are no mithan in Nagaland nowadays.) In Borolinglo there are still many mithan left. Informant's grandfather was still in fights with Angamis, not in his father's time. Sacrifices are given to Tingwang. When informant was young he did not go as far as Mahur, only after he was married. When he was young no potatoes were grown, only four years ago potatoes were introduced. Even when he was young they bought rice from outside (Maibong and Mahur). They sold chillies and cotton. When Inf. was young they were still in constant fear unless they be raided by Angamis. They only went out in a body. Nowadays they feel safe. The roads are also an advantage as they can more easily go to market. |
