Shoupa says in conversation repeatedly: "We are not Christians, and we are not non-Christians". There are still Niengbas but their function as members of a judicial body has largely been taken over by the elected members of the village council. The role of Benba has disappeared. The first reaper still exists, but he no longer fulfils his traditional role.
