Thachumi salt-making dispute; Lukrmi khel of Thachumi take oath not to supply Government with coolies |

To Yangnoi. Phozanasami are growing crops there and have made a temporary settlement on the site of the fort. Phozanagwimi came in with a complaint against Thachumi to the effect that they kept coming to their brine wells and using the wood they had cut to make salt. There is apparently a general report among all villages of the neighbourhood that the Lukrmi khel of Thachumi - always ill-disposed towards Government - have killed a pig and taken oath that they will never again supply any coolies to Government or obey any order given them, and have since repeated the oath killing a bull and distributing its flesh. It is quite likely to be true. This khel is a great thorn in the side of its own village as the members do not hesitate to loot from their fellow villagers and are said to freely take false oaths when accused of stealing and then to demand and extract a fine for having been put to the indignity of taking an oath. They sound like Semas. |
