Through Sonapur and Khataibora to Phat. Sonapur is a remnant, parts having split off to Dhansiripur and new Sonapur and the remainder having gone to another site. Khataibora is a new village which came last year from the North Cachar Hills, because there is such dikdari there in the form of impressed labour. It would be very interesting to compare the figures for impressment in the North Cachar Hills in proportion to the population with the corresponding figures in the Naga Hills. I cannot believe that there can really be any very heavy rate of impressment in North Cachar, as I can't think what it would be wanted for. In any case it is manifestly wrong that a village should be able to avoid its obligations in this way. |

Phat is the largest village in Diger and has been in its present site for 20 years or more which must be a record for these villages. It has over 50 houses of which 20 came from the North Cachar Hills last year and 3 more this year. Here a belated and rather heavy dak turned up, as well as a Mauzadar from the Haflong side in connection with an inter district case so I shall have to halt a day as the parties must be sent for. |
