Through Basampi to Songlhu fields. The village of Songlhu ran away in the influenza and never came back and is still living in its fields on a miserable site with filthy water. I have told them that they must go back to their village before next January or else I shall assess them at double revenue. This includes a man of Thenjol who has run away from the village near the road against my order. He will be dealt with as the other Thenjol runaways at Saiyang. |

At Basampi I heard a story most uncreditable to Anam. When Mr. Barnes came here in 1915 he camped at the river and personally ordered the gaonbura to bring coolies in the morning. Later the gaonbura went to Anam to find out how many coolies were wanted, when Anam told them that Sugit were to carry and no coolies were wanted at all, so the gaonbura brought none next day, as a result of which the gaonbura ate stick, the village was fined and made to carry two days further, Anam quietly letting them be punished without saying he was responsible. |
