text: On to Sayang - a longish march and the coolies not in till very late. There are 10 houses here which have run away from Thenjol to avoid work on the road. They have been doing this for years in spite of having been burnt and fined, alternately or together, almost annually. I shall assess them to extra revenue for as long as they live away from their village. One of the coolies who turned up to carry my loads was so filthy that I told him that he must wash in a stream by the way. He admitted that it was years since he had washed. When he got in he confessed to having washed his legs only on the way. So he had a bath with soap and assistance in public at Sayang.
