Difficulties encountered in crossing the flooded river Chulin |
text: |
To Henima - not without difficulty. The Chulin was in flood and fording it out of the question, and the cane bridge had been swept away. So we worked through the jungle up the river bank, a difficult path until we reached the junction of the two main heads of the Chulin, which we crossed separately, one by a great tree trunk that had fallen and just bridged the river, the other first of all by a monkey bridge consisting of a few bamboos connecting the over-hanging boughs of trees on either bank, but as the coolies could not swarm up 20 ft of more or less slippery tree trunk with their loads, we built a bamboo bridge across the stream for them - it took an hour and was difficult because of the current and I doubt if it lasted for long after we crossed. Meanwhile my sporting Behari Sais had swum the river with the pony. No mean feat in the speat there was. They were washed down a long way before they got across. Then up to Henima in the rain again. |
