Problems caused by the river Chulin flooding; temporary bamboo bridge |
text: |
Back to Mechangbung. An awful march in very heavy rain. In spite of two mackintoshes I was soaked to the skin by the end of the first four miles and might as well have fallen into a river. The streams across the path swelled till they were difficult to cross and the path was generally a stream or a swamp. The head waters of the Chulin pouring down in speat, and the bridge to Henima inevitably gone. The rain stopped at the end of the march and just as I was getting into Mechangbung the sun made an anaemic attempt to shine, as though it too had been diluted by the rain. No dak, the Chulin having cut all communication with Kohima. |

As the afternoon forebore to produce rain and even ran to a little feeble sunshine I sent to Insung to go down to the Chulin and put up a bamboo bridge the first thing next morning. If it does not rain in the night, the river may be just low enough to get across, but it is very doubtful. |

The functionary at Mechangbung who combines the offices of Chaukidar and road Muharrir applied for a rise of pay. He gets Rs 10/- at present and has worked, or rather held his appointment, for seven years. I think he might have another Rs 2/- for the present. It is not much use, however, trying to get this bit of road into real order until we can bridge the Chulin so that it can be got at in the rains. |
