To YUNGYA - a short march, but a steep one - down 2550 feet and up the same height to YUNGYA (which is just the same height as TANGSA) in the space of 4 miles or so. |

YUNGYA very hospitable and quite friendly. The two MORUNGS hostile to KAMAHU and friendly with TANGSA had fetched up from TANGSA and the village had built huts for us. From the top of the village we got a good view of the YANGNYU valley. |

OURANGKONG came in and I talked to them and to the YUNGYA headman and explained that Government could and would not tolerate headhunting in the Dikhu valley, and that it was not advisable for them to take heads without provocation among the villages of NIANG, TANGSA, KAMAHU, OURANGKONG, YUNGYA, YONG AND YACHAM. The YUNGYA head man did not like this at all. They demurred frankly but eventually agreed not to do so, though I doubt if their undertaking is worth much. YUNGYA is a village of some 350 houses or more and can and does raid with comparative immunity among its smaller neighbours. |

Yong came in with their own version of the CHANG raid. The details they gave on being questioned were many of them palpably irreconcilable and I am still in the dark as to what really happened, though I think there is no doubt about YONG's having turned on their allies and led them into a trap. They proposed however to know nothing whatever of YACHAM's intentions and to be themselves in hiding in fear of YACHAM, and to have had no communication with YACHAM since the CHANG raid. They confirmed the account which stated that the CHANGS had lost 14 heads. |
