Bridge building between Lakhuni and Charali |

To Nakachari. On the way I saw the work of the two bridges in building over the rivers between Lakhuni and Charali. |

The "Tsikangpani" is to have a span of 40 feet and according to the plans a height above low water level of 14 ft. which gives the truss a clearance of only 9 inches above high flood level. This is not enough, as a heavy log coming down in the spate might still collide with the under truss. My own suggestion was to invert the truss, which would then give a clearance of 5 ft. above high flood level and might even allow of a slight reduction in the height of the stone abutments, but the Subdivisional Officer and his Overseer say that this cannot be done as the trusses of the two girders need crosstying, and that no crossties are possible if the truss is inverted. They therefore prefer to retain the undertrussed plan and to raise the abutments by another foot. The crossties in question are arranged thus:- [diagram] and would clearly prevent traffic if the truss as planned is merely inverted, but I should rather like to know if they are essentially necessary. The utmost weight the bridge would have to bear is 3 loaded ponies, four at once could hardly get on to the length of the bridge and it is not wide enough for two abreast, and the inversion of the truss would reduce the width from 5 feet to four and a half, which is still plenty. |

At Charali the Inspection Bungalow (still in the hands of the Local Board) has no inhabitable servants' quarter (as it is mainly roofless) and is getting worn and worse while the Local Board are delaying the question of agreeing to the repair estimate. (My office will please put up the file). |
