Many deaths, particularly of women, at Phegwema; Sema land dispute with Chiphama |

To the new village of Kehoi's at Phegwema, where I found many sick and all the women but 4 (in about 17 houses) dead. The site is not well chosen particularly and probably they will move to the top of the adjoining hill, but a move is likely to mean a fresh epidemic of deaths. I went on past this village and camped at the site of Tizuma, an extinct Angami village half way between two new Sema ones. Chiphama came in and complained that I was taking too much of their land for the Semas. They don't need it in the least and there is heaps of land to spare here, but I may be able to keep them a slice between the two Sema lots to keep the latter from fighting with one another. They will both fight with Chiphama anyhow. |
