To Tangsa. Here elaborate preparations had been made for us, a camp being cleared and water and wood stocked ready for us. This we ungraciously acknowledged by arresting three of the leading villagers who had been concerned in the Yungya raid on Kamahu. However, the village in general seemed pleased rather than otherwise, as the gentlemen seemed to be far from popular. |

Yacham came in, and two of the chief men of a village named Shua (or Wakhu) east of the Yangnyu who had heard of the intended tour in that direction. I fancy their object was to try and induce us to attack a neighbouring village with whom they were unfriendly. Yacham brought word from the unfriendly khels of Yungya that their jungle was full of panji-pits and panjis and that we might burn the village if we pleased as they had left nothing in it, but that they would attack us if we came to to look for them in the jungle. We also learnt that it was arranged that the hostile clans should bring a part of their women and children across to Tangsa as soon as we had left, and Yacham had in fact brought food for them to eat while in Tangsa. |

In the evening we went up to the village and selected a site on the Yungya side for a picket to stay behind in Tangsa and join us in Yungya on the 8th. We also interrogated our prisoners. Shopen and his son and another, and established it quite clearly that they were privy to the plot to kill a Kamahu man; that Shopen had fed and warned the raiders, that the third man had carried the head part of the way for them and that the son had taken steps to prevent any warning reaching Kamahu. |
