Unsuccessful search in the jungle for the hostile Yungya men and their property |
text: |
Having rained all night it continued to pour all day and Sepoys and Nagas hunting for Yungya men and their property had the most miserable time exploring sopping jungle in driving rain. The Kamahu men with us, who were told to keep away, got all over the place and three or four were very nearly shot. We got a sight of three Yungya men of the hostile clans with spears and shields at about 700 yds. away and one fell when they were fired on. (They turned out, however to have belonged to the three friendly clans. The man was not hit.) But as he picked himself up and ran away apparently undamaged, he was probably only tripped in haste and not by a bullet. No one lay up for us, in spite of the threats, and we found a good deal of paddy and pigs hidden in the jungle getting back to camp after 8.0pm in the rain. |
