To Yungya, where we camped in a very narrow awkward space. water is short and there simply is not a decent camping ground within reach of it. The hostile khels were absolutely cleared out. There was not a chicken even left and the houses were in many cases dismantled leaving only the framework. The whole place was crawling with myriads of hungry fleas, the only living inhabitants, many of which we carried off with us and the rest were probably destroyed by our burning the houses. Firewood, thatch, even lumps of clay for making pots, were all removed and we found a good deal of much comparatively worthless stuff in the jungle near the village, but nothing of any value. Even the great wood drums had been dragged off somewhere: and the punishment we were able to inflict by burning what was left was very small indeed. |
