Description of the women of Mongnyu |

To Mongnyu, alias Phom, and Phohum on the map - a smallish village with three Morungs and a great flair for intrigue. We found the village beauties sitting in wait outside the gate - one or two had washed their faces and showed very fair skins with a touch of red underneath, but otherwise they were very dirty and every one of them had pan dribbling from the corners of her mouth. Their position in Phom society may be gathered from the fact that they put up one of their menfolk to tell us that they would like us to get children on them - and the married women and their husbands looking on. Some of the women here increase their natural repulsiveness by cutting their hair short and plucking it out entirely along two broad lines one on each side of the centre of the head. |

From Mongnyu we could see the course of our tour for the next six days, the village across the Yangnyu (Yangmun) being clearly visible from here. Mongnyu has never, I think, been visited before. |
