To Pongu, a Konyak village permanently at war with Hukpang. The people were effusively friendly and had a line of contiguous Chungas of modhu, lent on a rail, which stretched for 150 yards alongside the path to regale the column. |

The village is a very strong one and with exceedingly strong defences. The curly-haired Negroid type of head was very prevalent and the carvings in the village clever and more naturalistic than usual. This village, like the last two, has never before been visited. It has about 180 houses. Yangphong, Yanching and Shakchi villages came in to see us, and we were able to send word to the villages across the Yungmun to meet us at the river. |

Pongu is marked on the map as "Chang". It dislikes the idea of making peace with Hukpang as that village is so notoriously treacherous that it is much safer to be at war with it. Knowing what I do of Hukpang, I think it is wise. |
