Through Yangphong to Yangching. These two villages are marked "Chamba" and "Yangtung" on the map. They were visited by Col Woodthorpe in 1875-76, he coming from Hukpang across the Piyongkung. The situation was delicate this time as we had Pongu coolies and Pongu is at war with Yangching. The coolies at first swore they would not carry past Yangphong, but were eventually induced to carry on past Yangching to the river where we camped, probably near the site of Col. Woodthorpe's camp. He rightly described the spot as an admirable camping ground. |

In the afternoon I bathed, and found a huge concourse of strange Nagas - about two hundred assembled on the opposite bank. They appeared to be quite friendly, however, and one of the head-men from our side kept them away by throwing stones. The trans-Yangnyu chiefs of Aukhu ("Ukha") Jakphong and Yakchu came in and professed friendliness. |
