Fine weather appreciated during a halt at the Yangmun; salaami gifts described |
text: |
Halted at the Yangmun to let the column get clean and dry - a fine day again with high wind - and badly needed it was, as there is a certain amount of sickness by now. Anphang ("Afang") and Yanghum came in with presents and professions of good will. Sepoys and Nagas went out to catch fish. I bathed and dealt with a belated dak. Ukha wanted to know if they should "clear the camp the sahibs used last time" (48 years ago) and Anphang mentioned that they had given Col Woodthorpe 2 goats, pig, 10 fowls and 20 eggs, and that they regarded sahibs as their brother and would do whatever they were asked to do. All these villages recognize Ahon, our Shiong Dobashi, though he does not know them and has only once been this way and that to get heads from them. The influence of Chui in these parts is very considerable and Shiong of course, is an offshoot of Chui. The salaami eggs brought in by Jakphang were, for a change, neither addled nor bad - they hatched in the evening in the kitchen. |
