Chare is a Sangtam village with an Ao khel in it, the Aos putting their dead on machans (while the Sangtams bury) and otherwise keeping up Ao customs. It is a long time since there was any head-taking here, but I noticed a row of old laos representing heads on the outer wall of an Ao house, one of which had a cranium attached and others lower jaws; these were probably taken from Litim many years ago. Sangtams put their heads in the morung. Mr. Mills being unable to walk I left him in Mokokchung, Mr. Pawsey going with me. |
