3/8/1926 To Sakhabama. The Tsidzu has played havoc with the panikhets all along its valley. The river has straightened out its course suddenly cleaning acres of fertile land down to the bare stones and incidentally cutting in behind the big suspension bridge of which it carried away the anchorage on the Cheswezumi side wrecking the bridge, that end of which was swept down stream where it lies now. The iron work and ropes can probably be all rescued and used again, but it is a question whether it will be cheaper to add a second span of sixty feet to connect the now isolated abutment standing intact to the new east bank where there is quite decent rock for a foundation or to cut a diversion of some two miles of fresh bridle path and put the bridge higher up the stream in a new place. The overseer has found quite a suitable site, a little further up, but it will I think be very expensive, as it will entail a banded road across a lot of panikhets, and the alternatives seem to me to be either to bridge the river a good deal higher up or to rebuild in the present site with an extra span. The latter would be more convenient, as it would not lengthen the road to Cheswezumi. |
