Praise of Mr Pawsey's new road; Chaukidar's problems obtaining thatch |
text: |
To Nakachari by rail, leaving Borhat about 9.0 and reaching Nakachari about 2.0 p.m. Walked to Charali I.B. and went thence in Mr. Pawsey's car to look at the new art road to the foot of the hills and back to the I.B. We went up the road as far as the Chang-chang-pani bridge. There are bad places owing to slipping sandy soil, but it looks like settling down in time and a great deal of it is in excellent order. Mr. Pawsey deserves much credit for this road, which only came into being at all as a result of his energy and the idea of which was entirely his. Mr. Mitchell his Overseer has done good work on this road. |

The Chaukidar at Charali I.B. complains that he can get no thatch. His house used to be maintained by Government inside the I.B. compound. It was moved out as being inconvenient and a nuisance and still maintained outside until the I.B. was handed over to the Local Board. It is, of course, exceedingly difficult to get thatch at Nakachari. Perhaps the S.D.O. will consider the question of raising the pay of this Chaukidar, who has worked since about 1900, and of allowing him some of the indented thatch as soon as the present lines and stables can be replaced by tin structures. |
