Dispute regarding sale of Wokha land to the Mission |
text: |
Halted. The Gaonburas and most of the village came up and said that the village as a whole did not agree to a Missionary settlement on their land. The actual owners of the land, two men, Renchamo and Nlamo would like to sell to the Mission at a very high price and eat the profit, but the general feeling of the village seems to be very much opposed to this and it seems to me to be a case in which the village is entitled to be consulted. As the Gaonburas point out no one in the village would own any land if the community had not come and occupied the place as a community and they claim that individuals are not entitled to put their own profit before the wish of the community, which is certainly in accordance with Naga custom and sentiment as a whole. |
