text: To Khonoma. The village was pulling a new door - everyone in their best clothes, with dancing and junketing. The door was a solid piece of wood about 10 ft. by 6 ft. by 6 inches or more, which had to be dragged into the village and up the steps to the Merhema gate, then turned on one side and coaxed through it on edge. The way it was manhandled by a solid mass of men working in unison without anyone to give orders or directions was astonishing. It reminded me more of the work of gigantic ants than of human beings.
