9th. Halted Kilomi. A report came in by Natoi - an independent Sema chief - that war is afoot between Shietz and Lungmatrare - the former a mixed Sema and Sangtam village the latter pure Sangtam. It started apparently by a dispute over a transaction in which a fowl was to be bartered for salt - Nahekhu, the Sema trader who had come from Shietz ended by taking the salt he demanded, from the house of the man who offered only a smaller quantity, in the absence of the householder. Nahekhu went off home, but his companion Shoikhu, who had gone with him to interpret was hurriedly shut into Lungmatrare by some one's slamming the village door. Sheleki the owner of the salt went for him with a dao but he escaped with only his clothes cut. The Lungmatrare version is that he fell on his own dao. |

They tell me that the normal method of exchange in the Sema country is now by barter, which is of course the old method in use but had practically disappeared 20 years ago, and has returned in the absence of any coin in circulation. |
