September 9th. To Dimapur. I stopped at the first slip to enquire on the spot about a complaint lodged by Nagas against the P.W.D. about land to be acquired for the protection of the road. I stopped again at the Zubza river to see a stone which P.W.D. want to blast to straighten the stream and the Nagas object because if it is destroyed their panikhets will lose its protection and be washed away. I think they are right and I persuaded the P.W.D. to leave it alone for the present. It is always a very chancy thing to interfere with the course of a swift stream. I stopped again at the Zubza garden to curse the mali and at the slip to investigate a charge of excessive charges for transporting mal, and again at the Nichuguard to inspect the police outpost. |
