11th. Left Dimapur at 1.01 am standard and reached Simalguri R/S at 7.5 am. By trolley thence to Naginimara R/S where Sub- Divisional Officer and the Manager Borjan Colliery met me. Thence to Kongnyu - inspected the thana in the afternoon. The Manager told me a tale of a man of Lungkam who came and listened in to his wireless. A little later the elders of the village came in to Mokokchung and said to the S.D.O. that such and such a man of their village had been telling the most extravagant lies about his having heard people in Britain talking, and clocks striking etc., and that of course what he said was all bunk, as the man was a liar, but was there any foundation at all in reality for his having invented this tale of his having heard such things. The S.D.O. said that not only was it possible, but that he too had listened in at Borjan. The elders replied that since he told them so they supposed they must believe this incredible relation; but that they had fined their fellow villager a pig for telling lies, and that they had the pig eaten. |
