possible sacrificial origin of name 'Naginimara' |

18th. Tried a case under section 107 at Kongnyu - some Pathans had had an affray over a gambling den - and went down to the railhead and so by trolley to Simalguri with the Colliery Manager in the evening. On the way down to Naginimara station he pointed out a block of sandstone in the jungle just S.East of the Niginijan stream. This stone was hollowed with a circular basin clearly artificial and was pointed out as the place of sacrifice of the Nagini who gave her to the stream and the locality. The story I heard of the origin of the name Naginimara was that a Naga girl fell from a tree, but this hollowed stone certainly looks like a 'sakti' and might easily be a place of sacrifice. The Manager offered to get the jungle cleared away; there may be other remains there. |
