15th. Over the Temoru ridge at about 5400 ft. and down into the valley (4400) and then up the other side and over the Lothuru ridge again at 5400 and so to the village of Rangkyu, also known as Mukutiri, after its parent village about 11 miles. The camp was at 5000 ft., but at 4.30 pm the thermometer showed 80 in the shade. The Temoru ridge was noticeable for extraordinarily large and frequent beds of dog violets, and the nullahs for large dark frogs ('kakapu' in Sema) whose hoarse croaking is the sign for the sowing of the millet crop. |

At Rangkyu several villages came in, and we received presentation goats for the escort and pigs and millet for the coolies. Rice is not grown here. I gave a red cloth each to Chumki of Temoru, Sakhalu and Hotoi of Purotomi, Lothu of Lothuru, two head men of Rangkyu (of different clans), and two of Zhumakiri, the latter two having apparently had them before, about 10 years ago. As I only had 5 cloths with one I had to borrow three from interpreters with me. They will score by getting new clothes instead of partly worn ones when I get back to Kohima. |

At Rangkyu the following villages were located and put on the map :- Rangkyu (Mukutiri) - lat. 25 51', long. 94 55', height 5000 ft. Lungtsongru (Tonghoki) - lat 25 53' long. 94 55' height 4500 ft. Mutongru (Muthomi) - lat 25 55', long. 94 65' height 5000 ft. There was a golgotha in Rangkyu containing two heads, a foot and other relics, from Mutungru, whose chief came in in spite of being at war with Rangkyu. |
