text: While we were having tea a dak came in, and with it a wire from Government ordering me to hold myself in readiness to go to Shillong on receipt of another telegram, and telling me to wire the earliest date I could arrive. Nothing was said as to what I was wanted for. This is about the most remote camp in the North Cachar Hills. My reply, carried as fast as a man can carry it, cannot reach a telegraph office before the night of the day after tomorrow. I must turn back tomorrow and abandon the rest of my tour. This makes it impossible for me to carry out one of my main objects, the trial of inter-district cases at Henima. Mr. Calvert will go on.
