25th Jan. Halted. Today there turned up, breathing fire, the wife of the Christian whom we listened to yesterday. She threw fresh light on the character of that smug gentleman. According to her he was turned out of the mission for adultery in various villages. She forgave him, but he has turned her out and taken to himself another (and younger) wife. She demands compensation and the right to tear the new wife's clothes, pull off her beads and scratch her face - all in public. |

We went to Losker and back (5 miles). It is the only village in which I have seen nice old things. I acquired an outstanding and unique piece of old metal work, bought from a Bete village 40 years ago. Not being ancestral the owners were quite ready to sell. |
