26th Jan. To Gunjong, the old Subdivisional Head-Quarters. 10 miles 8-12:45. We went via Longren and Disao, through Kachari country all the way. Checking of houses appears to be more necessary in Kachari villages than in those of any other tribe. On the ground that widows pay no house tax the Mauzadars have been writing off any house in which there is a widow regardless of what other stalwart inhabitants it may contain. |

Every Kachari village in the hills seems to contain a 'deka chang' in which the young men sleep, though the custom has died out in the plains. Heavy canes are kept in them one of which a young man takes with him when he goes to visit his lady love, for use if he finds he has been forestalled by a rival. |

The Mauzadar could not meet us as he is down with smallpox in, where there are 8 cases. The outbreak is widely spread, and it is difficult to believe the Vaccination has ben efficiently carried out in the past. More touring by the Subdivisional Officer will help to remedy this. |

In Gunjong two Kacharis have set up cotton agencies, a movement to be encouraged. They are paying 8/- a maund. |
