First visit to Chare; tall mithan posts; burial customs |

To Chare (sq.80) - 9 miles. The column consisted of 2 1/2 platoons Assam rifles under the command of Major Williams, 360 permanent volunteer coolies and 20 temporary coolies, under the command of Mr. Smith, dobashis and headmen, Dr. C. von Furer- Haimendorf, an anthropologist, and myself. Chare, a half Sangtam and half Ao village is now administered, but when I was SDO Mokokchung the frontier had not been extended to include it and I had never visited it before. The very tall mithan posts, branching almost from the ground, are noticeable, as are the elaborately carved posts of the grave-houses and the offerings to the dead exactly similar to those in Southern Sangtam villages. All surrounding villages came in to see us. |
