march to Songphel village |
text: |
Packed up by 7.30, left by 8.10. A mile of more on the road. Then by bridle track, through a village. Hell of a long march (14.5 miles) climbing through woods, but once or twice through jungle. Reached Songphel about 3.30 and damn glad to see it. Blisters developing. Many sick, a grubby lot, doctored on back verandah. Lovely view. One large living-room with earth floor. Passed sulphur spring on road. Asked why it smelt, were (6) told wild animals all came to drink there, & that was why. 14.5 miles. 2 minutes silence on road. Got in 3.50p.m. |
