text: Heavy rain all night, in spite of hopeful gleam in sky yesterday afternoon. Marched about 9 o'clock again, carrying umbrella & bamboo staff kindly cut by Jeff. Umbrella did trick, & rain let up about 10.30, clouds broke, & by 11.30 sun shining. Trailed up hill from river (36) in bath of sweat. Lex fell going down to river (appallingly slippery; clay mud like grease) and cut her knee. Twisted ankle, but said it was all right & went on well. Reached spur below bungalow & found chowkidar with zu & oranges. Ate oranges. Climbed on, joining in coolies chant, to amusement of coolies. (Coolies chant. Grunt every four steps. Tone to suit performer). Lex & I went on ahead. Reached bungalow after awful greasy descent from summit of ridge. Arrived about 2.30 & had cold tiffin. Sanitation embarassingly near servants' quarters. Tried jungle, but wet and poor cover. Dozed till 5.30, baths, & drinks at 7p.m. (37) Bungalow (and village) called Lukumbi. Passed picturesque wedding party on hill, but too slippery to look close. One real dandy with 6 or 7 white or scarlet necklaces & spray of scarlet berries in oiled hair-knot.
