Saramba Camp to Joute. Next march reputed to be 3 miles, one beyond 6, so Jeff told coolies to double. Many Nagas in camp, all rather (50) wild. Strongly objected to doubling march, wanted 4 annas for 3 miles. As soon as we left camp for shore, row began. Lumbu trying to oil ride on Jeff's raft. Shumshu appeared on bank, letting off uninterupted Manipuri at quite deaf lumbu. Lex & I got Jeff (at last) to sent lumbu up. Eventually had to do 3 mile march. Camera packed in japha, so no photos to-day, and little to report. Camp some way from river, in jungle. Sanitation by hole in floor of platform erected over deep nullah, with hole loyally dug 20 foot down. Headman wild-haired but amusing Kuki. Sat by the fire at 1 yard range & had hell of a good look. Nagas came by with live rats held by tails; destined for stew. Dusk, & way to H. of P. very boggy. |
