text: | Left Silchar by lorry 11.20a.m. Arrived Lakhipur 12.20. Marched for Jhirighat 12.30; rain threatening, specks fell. Kuki coolies and not much good. Reached Jhiri 4.30. Signs of floods everywhere, and many tea-bushes dead. Shamshu and Kharram Din at bungalow. Self quite speechless with bad cold and sucking cough-lozenges wholesale. Jhiri bungalow paradise after pigstye at Silchar. Jeff mixed me such a hot whisky Celia swears I hiccupped in my sleep. |
