text: (81) Dec. 6th. Pamyel. (76.5) 12.5.
text: Marched, Jeff stiff in the knee. Had hangover from mixing whisky and gin night before; both he and I had whisky, he before a gin drink and I after; results apparent. Very hot and tiring march up and down, down from Thalon, over valley, up second ridge, second valley, and up long, long, zig-zag sweat, through bamboos too short to give shade, with the afternoon sun on our backs. March most exhausting of trip, pretty near.
text: Reached camp at last, found it off road, muddy pool behind, verandah too narrow to sit on. Sat by fire, with quite cheerful set of pagan locals. Tried to negotiate for woman's pipe. Wouldn't sell. Went early to bed, all very tired.
text: Heard two loud reports from direction of E. hills at sunset; too loud and close together for Tower musket, such as locals brought in from fields later; Barisal Guns reported from N. Cachar hills; may (82) be similar phenomenon in Manipur.
text: One man spoke Hindustani to us, and swore he had been in France with Jeff. Gave boy aspirin and usual quinine issue for fever.
