Went down, as promised, to Chingjaroi Khunao and the Christian village. Pneumonia case (serious) at Chingjaroi Khunao. Christian village very sickly, rickets, bad hearts, scabies, double curvature of the spine, and much malaria. We are now out of quinine. Khullakpa wants Christian village (who met me with arch and hymn) to move higher up to site near Khulen, but they won't. Master- babu's small boy had pneumonia. Also very sickly baby, kidneys, heart, lungs all wrong, also pneumonia. Eventually returned to basha about 3.30, and after I had ordered and eaten ham-and-egg lunch, Wombat said he had prepared 3-course lunch and what was he to do with it? I told him to cutlet it for dinner, which he did, not very successfully. Luikai budding out as assistant compounder, handing bottles, etc. Long 2-mile sweat back to camp from Christians. |

They are beginning to come and worry for cigarettes with that same old gesture which (155) annoyed me so much. Luikai was the culprit tonight, but he did ask, though he giggled wildly through nervousness. Still, it put my back up, and I went off up the road in a fine huff. Tried to sketch, but the crowd was as bad as ever, though quite respectful. |
