A long hill down and a long trail up, but it was a misty day and not too hot. A big perao (4 huts; 2 big bashas & 2 shacks) but all but mine were in a fine state of disrepair. It rained in the evening, and Wombat said the cookhouse roof leaked. Told him if it poured buckets they could come into mine; but he was much startled, and said 'Oh, no, there's an extra hut'. I told him that leaked, and so did the compounder's, but luckily it was only a shower. Sent Saknio to Ukhrul with letters and medicine indent. His brother is here as permanent coolie. God knows why, except that he looked so unhappy when I wanted to turn him off with the others. He is not young, and Lord knows why I kept him. But h is quite amiable. Paid off 8 men - the Saknio Bros. staying on. 16/- + 2 bakhsheesh. Wrote letters half the evening. Journal over dinner. Wombat suddenly turned up - when I had finished writing at 10p.m. & was half dead - with a home-made loaf, baked apparently in a butter-tin, because he said I looked unhappy! It looked like sponge-cake and tasted pretty odd, but I ate it. |
