Chinaorang's leg very painful, though his fever had stopped. He limped up to basha in a.m. Sent compounder to dress it. Chinaorang thinks he can walk & carry his thappu; I think he will probably be carried. Actually, he will probably walk sans thappu. |

Village is putting on a tamasha, & want photos. Put up soda- bicarb. myself, as Jangsang has been sloshing it out any old how. Luikai still wearing the new cloth, and looking smart enough to wait a a Governor's dinner-party. Saknio very pianissimo yesterday, but is visible to-day at selected intervals. He is 'gardening' the orchids just now, under the cold and long-range directions of Luikai. |

Tamasha opened at 12.15, with rain threatening. Christians arrived and sang hymn. Then they sang another, to the tune of "John Brown's Body", which strained my self control horribly, especially as I caught Abung's eye in the middle. Then Jangsang came and they sang another; he asked me if I'd like to select one, but I said I didn't know their hymns, so they chose one, with only 25 verses instead of the usual 79, and after an hour their (55) tamasha concluded. The pagans were a long time coming, and it began to rain. When they did arrive it was in a deluge, so we cleared the basha, ripped a hole in the back wall for light, and had the girls sing & dance in there. Then it cleared up, so we went outside and I took some photos. |

Luikai offered to carry the medicine thappu. "Bahut capre diye, bahut bakhsheesh diye; bahut paisa giye; Chinaorang nahin sakta; hum Karega". I told him he was now bearer & mustn't do coolie- work, and he retired, bucked. So to bed, exhausted. |
