Woke feeling rotten. Diarrhoea, tummy well upset. Only one mithan in village. Owners wants Rs 60. Later in day visitors began to arrive; grand total, Asalu, Chota Laisong, Bara Nenglo, Chota Laisong, Bara Nenglo, Chota Nenglo, Kepelo, Hangrum, Hegokulwa, and I think one or two more; Hajaichak had a death & genna, but the gaonburas came, also small dance-team from Thingje; Hangrum big contigent, also Kepelo & Nenglo. Much fun with gramophone, mirror, zip-fasteners, etc. All bucks in full dress. In a.m. had spear-throwing, stone-putting & long jump, Laisong & camp only competing. |

Booth's staff (I suspect the cook) accused Luikai of using my lard for the Tangkhuls' own cooking; called up Luikai, & inquired, as he had (yesterday) taken a new tin of lard; he denied, said lard was for my biscuits; I looked at tin, & though some might have gone, it is not like him to steal. Sent him back to cookhouse with the tin. (16) Dances in evening. Hangrum very good, though all dances very fine; girls too young to be much good; bucks splendid. Hangrum girls in charge of fuzzy-headed, bristle-whiskered dancing master with a cataract in one eye. Booth suggested he was too plain for there to be risk! Muscular individual, and splendid dancer. Dance ground too rough, but they all danced over it somehow. |
