dispensary and spear throwing at Hangrum; promise not to sack Luikai |

(30) Hangrum. March 14th. |

Held dispensary & spear-throwing. Spear-throwing & gramophone very popular. Luikai's continued blight very wearing. Felt ready to sack him, but made last attempt to get some sense out of him & got the whole story. According to him, the cook (Booth's) told him he would be sacked over the lard business as soon as I reached Haflong, where I could get plenty of servants; so poor Luikai had been sighing all day & weeping all the night, for bang at one fell swoop would go marriage-price and marriage, job and prospects, & he didn't know how he could face his village. Poor quarrelsome, faithful, jealous, sensitive little maggot! I swore I was not going to sack him and he went off, apparently not much cheered. |

Toushem Khunao came calling from Manipur. Gave him chit to take to hospital & one to Paddy, but he won't go in till the field-work slacks off. He was complaining of an internal growth. |
