A death while the crops are ripe and the harvest is being gathered entails a day's na called 'neo-sit-na. No fieldwork is done, nor work in the village, but the village is not closed, though nothing may be sold or given to strangers, nor may birds be brought into the village from outside; they are "quick goers" and would cause the rice to go quickly too. The Na is to prevent "the dhan going with the dead man", as so many other things have gone in his grave-goods. The tingkhupeo offers a fowl at the hazoa in the morning (observed 19.10.42). |
