I was absent from the district in the winter of 1944-5, but returned to it when my war-service ended in May, 1945. As early as 1940 I had noticed the curious migration-pattern of the Hangrum community, and on collating my notes after my return I realised that similar phenomena occurred in other (vi) villages whose geographical distribution was suggestive, and that the whole question required investigation. I spent most of the winter of 1945-6 in camp at Impoi, studying the detail the movements of the different communities in the Asalu cluster and, in the course of the same general inquiry, I revisited Hangrum, Baladhan, Nenglo, Khangnam, Haijaichak, Peisia and a number of other unoccupied and occupied village sites. The results of the investigation will be found in the chapter on Cycle-Migration. [3 [Record T86663] |
