In 1942 work was halted by the war, and from 1942 to 1944 I commanded Nzemi scouts serving with the guerilla forces. I continued to take notes whenever possible, and my duties took me to a number of outlying villages, such as Khangnam, Peisia, Magulong, Katang and Injaona, Hepoloa, Toushem and Mandeo, which I should otherwise have been unable to visit, the comparisons made and the notes taken on these journeys being invaluable. With the Japanese invasion of Assam in 1944 there was a partial return to unadministered conditions and there then ensued among the Nzemi an interesting reversion to obsolete war-time practices. During the invasion I succeeded in sending most of my books and papers to safety, but some had to be buried for a time and suffered a certain amount of damage. |
