text: During this period the collection of data was through no fault of mine somewhat spasmodic. In the first year work was interrupted by political disturbances and hampered by Nzemi hostility to the administration, a hostility naturally extended to a Government-sponsored investigator. With the growth of confidence this attitude disappeared, and by 1941 work was proceeding satisfactorily. The greater part of my notes date from this year.
